This is a replica of a Warring States period (c. 475-221 BCE) Chinese lacquer drum with a pedestal design of phoenixes on tigers' backs, known as a hù zuò ni? o jià g? (????? ). The original artifact was unearthed in central Hubei province, China. The base features two reclining tigers, with phoenix-like birds standing on their backs. A large drum is suspended between the two birds from their phoenix crowns. The piece is finished in black lacquer with red and yellow painted designs, characteristic of Chu culture.
